NEWSPAPER INVESTIGATION

On Tuesday May the 1st, after discussing different styles used by different newspapers and how each one was marketed, the students following the Return to Study Planning Period were placed in groups of five and given the task of choosing and reading, an article from various newspapers. We were encouraged to highlight and then compare the different styles of writing used by each one. We each asked to bring in our own copy of the days press from a selection of tabloids and broadsheet newspapers, which included The Sun (Karly), The Telegraph (Lisa), The Guardian (Maggie), The Times (Mich) and The Daily Mail (Myself). It was necessary to find an article that had been covered in each newspaper to ensure a fair comparison could be made. With three coloured pens, we read through the article in our own papers and underlined any statements that we thought were, FACT (blue), OPINION (red) or ASSUMPTION (green) and then discussed, in our group, what we thought of the article. We discussed issues such as the language used in each paper, how it affected the story and whether or not the articles showed any form of bias. The class was a little different to what I expected as I thought the investigation was going to based more on individual research.

The article we chose to read was concerned with how the calls for Brigadier Lane’s dismissal came about. While reading the article in the Daily Mail ‘Brigadier Caught in the Crossfire’

(Page 4) it became apparent that the article was built around few facts and used mainly other people’s opinions to create a story, and at times it began to sound like an autobiography. This was very similar to the style used in the article featured in The Times ‘Hoon Unaware that Brigadier was Leaving’ (Page 4) where Mich felt that it became too detailed by mentioning too many names and at times even became boring. According to Maggie, the article in the Guardian ‘Military Top Brass Rally to Defence of Beleaguered British Commander in Afghanistan’ (Page ) was also very similar, but instead of repeated name-dropping, it used far too many complicated words, which was just as confusing. style is used by the articles in The Sun ‘Armchair Snipers’ (Page 6) and The Telegraph ‘Brigadier puts Troops before Politics’ (Page 6) as these use very simple language which Lisa said was very easy to understand and Karley felt that The Sun even used light slang to create an effect.

One thing that was apparent was the use of bias in most of the articles, some being more deliberately biased than others. For example, The Guardian blatantly defends the ‘Top Brass’ that are mentioned in its article, and yet The Times frequently labels the ‘Top Brass’ as clueless, the use of ‘Hoon Unaware that Brigadier was Leaving’ as the title is very suggestive of this. During the discussion, Lisa said that the article featured in The Telegraph did not show any bias. But in my opinion, the title alone ‘Brigadier puts Troops before Politics’ shows a certain degree of bias, depicting the Brigadier, Roger Lane, as a very moral man. The Sun seemed to be the most bias paper and was written in the view of one person who, according to Karley, seemed more interested in trying to sell his own forthcoming book than covering the story.

During the discussions it became apparent that all the papers included very few facts and tended to use other people’s opinions more than anything else to write the story. For example, some parts of the articles were known to be true such as the fact that the Brigadier was to be replaced whereas some parts were based purely on judgements or beliefs held by the author. When the authors resorted to using many of their own assumptions it left us unsure of what to believe.

Although I was generally pleased with the group I was placed in, we did experience a lack of communication to start with. Some of the group clearly understood the instructions, whereas others in the group were adamant that the article did not need to be the same in every paper. This led to a big delay and I felt that this caused us to be rushed towards the end.

Apart from this, the group dynamics were very effective and everyone’s opinions were equally valuable. I did not feel that one person dominated the discussions and was very pleased that

every person in the group made a significant contribution. I was also satisfied with my own contribution and believe I said all that I could to help the other team members with their own investigations, particularly when I recognised the bias and opinionated nature of the article in the Daily Mail.

The task itself was fairly easy to comprehend and although we had a few problems prior to the group discussions, we did manage to get back on track and complete the task. However, when working individually I did discover that the most challenging part was still to come. After reviewing all the notes and information I had gathered, I started to realise that the different styles used by each paper were very diverse. This was something that had never occurred to me before.

The exercise also made me realise just how important it is to stay focused during a task and how it is essential that you listen clearly to each and every member of the group to ensure that you obtain as much information as possible.

I think this exercise will definitely change my reading habits as looking into articles in so much depth has highlighted that a simple story can be exaggerated and manipulated in order to make it more appealing to the reader.

The Reluctant Belligerent is the story of American diplomacy leading up to her entrance in the second world war. It details the actions of the American government as it struggled to maintain peace without taking any direct military action. The United States made a great effort to avoid war at all costs, and thus is Robert Divine’s premise; as is clearly stated in the following quote “Thus to the very end, the pattern of American reaction to events abroad held true. From the first signs of aggression in the 10s to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States refused to act until there was no choice.” (158).

The book begins with Roosevelt’s first inaugural address in which he dismissed America’s role in foreign affairs and promised to pull the country out of its grave depression. The Americans of this time held similar views. They no longer had any specific goals in their foreign policy beyond their naive desire to live and let live. However, this policy would be fruitless soon, when Hitler came to power in 1. He soon denounced the disarmament clauses in the Treaty of Versailles, and proclaimed that he would maintain a standing army of 550,000 men. This dramatic display of diplomatic strength from Hitler, greatly annoyed a fellow dictator, Benito Mussolini. He thought himself to be the ideal fascist statesmen, and eagerly pursued triumphs of his own. He wished to carve an empire in eastern Africa.

German rearmament and Italian aggression finally awakened Americans to dangers more perilous than the depression. There was a national consensus that involvement in the upcoming war must be avoided, but a clear-cut policy of how to do so would be the topic of bitter debates for five years. Finally, an internationalist by the name of Charles Warren created the blueprint that would insure American abstention from the inevitable European war. His plan stated that instead of following America’s traditional neutral rights policy, that a legislation be passed to forbid arms exports to belligerent states, to ban loans by private bankers to governments at war, and to prevent American citizens from traveling on belligerent ships. After many alterations, a form of the above plan was passed as the Neutrality Act of 15.

Just weeks after it was passed, the act came under its first test. On October , 15, Italy had invaded Ethiopia without any formal warning. The United States recognized a state of war between Italy and Ethiopia, and imposed the restrictions of their recent Neutrality Act on the two countries. These restrictions included the embargoing of arms exports and warning Americans not to travel on ships of either belligerent. This act, though effective, was due to expire on February , 16. Therefore, the president signed an extension to the act, which was to include a ban on loans to belligerent nations.

A week later, on March 7, Hitler informed the world that he thought the Locarno Treaty dead, and that he was moving troops into Rhineland, the last frontier between Germany and France. Soon after, France fell to the incredible might of the Nazi army. When this happened, America realized that their last line of defense was Great Britain, and started to openly show support towards them. They sent all the arms, money, and raw materials that they could, believing that this would be enough to put a stop to Hitler’s evil regime.

However, Germany was not the only foe they feared. Japan was slowly but surely making her conquest through Asia. Japanese forces not only controlled all of the eastern Chinese shoreline, but the major cities with-in the country as well. They were also planning on conquering south-east Asia as part of the New Order in Asia. Americans thought that by putting economic pressure, Japan would be compelled to retreat. However, this spurred her on. Thousands of tons of oil were being consumed hourly, and with no flow of incoming oil, they would have to tap into the rich reserves in the Dutch Indies to survive.

With no visible means of diplomatic solution, Japan and America would soon be forced into the war. But America would not make the first move. So, on December 7, 141, Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor. No matter how big of a national tragedy this may have been, at the time of the attack, there was a sense of relief. It gave the United States a reason to go to war. That day, the congress recognized a state of war between Japan and Germany, with only one dissenting vote. However war with Germany wasn’t recognized until four days later, when Germany severed diplomatic relations with the United States of America, and declared war.

Overall, I thought that The Reluctant Belligerent was a well written, informative piece of literature. Some parts got a bit confusing because the author tended to skip back a few years in history to make a reference, but I never really got lost. There was also a lot of information to take in, but that never left me bored. The author’s writing was structured in a manner which always had me engrossed. I also learned many things from this book which I had never known before. For-instance, when people refer to World War II, they usually always refer to the post Pearl Harbor era of it. This is true in video games, movies, and even many historical fiction novels. Therefore, I had little idea of what went on before that attack. I knew the significant dates and names that were taught to us in seventh grade history, but I had no idea of the major toll it had taken on the world already.

I stress again that this was a very well written and informative book, which provided many insights into recent history. It also had a very sound thesis, which I agree with completely. The United States, as the singular world super power, could have done much to save the world from the tremendous amount of grief it had to endure. However, she was too caught up in trying to avoid what would turn out to be the ultimate solution her entrance into the war.

We left England to avoid debt and for a change to have a better life. The last day we saw England was March , 175. We were going to a colony in America called Georgia. June 16, 175, we have finally reached land. I have longed for this day for three months. We were so happy that all of us hugged the ground. The debtor¡¦s ship had finally arrived in Georgia and we couldn¡¦t be happier. After three months of torture we were at our new home.

When analysing Hamlet during Act I, it is notable that he is normal, confident and outgoing, while talking with Horatio regarding the ghost. However, after he sees the apparition for himself, Hamlet seems slightly over persistent, ensuring Marcellus and Horatio promise their silence about their knowledge of accurances regarding what they have just witnessed. This shows that Hamlet is a very intelligent and aware man. His keeping his friends silent, provides him with a way to plan his revenge for Claudius without him having even the slightest idea - providing surprise.

These are all things that suggest Hamlet was in control of his mind state, and although different, sane at this stage in the play.

Act II is a crucial part of the development of Hamlet’s madness, as he, for the first time, begins his retaliative plans for Claudius. He lays the foundations for these plans by coming to Ophelia ‘with his doublet all unbraced’ and essentially acting like a stranger. It is vital to note that two months have passed between Act I and Act II, because it is clear that Hamlet has been ‘normal’ throughout this preceding time period. This is why Ophelia is so shocked by Hamlets behaviour, and consults her father Polonius in tears. Polonius incorrectly believes that Hamlet is crazy for Ophelias love, and seeks out the king to inform him of what he has learnt. This shows that Polonius also finds this behaviour to be odd, proving Hamlet has changed or acted out of place - not normally.

If Hamlet had in fact been acting normally, then it would be fair to say that he is a natural ‘madman’ or faker, but he was not. He was enforcing his cunning plan, and it would appear he has created the confusion and controversy he was looking for.

Hamlet continues to dazzle when talking with Polonius during Act II, sc II, confirming Polonius’ prediction in just one quick conversation. This is absorbing, as Polonius, although sporting a pre-disposed theory on Hamlet’s intriguing state of mind, is surprised at what he sees. This is evidence, once again, that Hamlet has not always been like this. There is not even the slightest hint to show he was ever a faker.

One can only assume Hamlet has firstly, control of his mind set, and secondly, that he has used this change of personality as a vital role in his devious scheme for his fathers revenge.

During Act II, sc II, Hamlet shows his intelligent apprehension for seizing opportunities to test the truth of the Ghosts words. He detains an actor, requesting that he perform a play with a few of his own inserted lines. He does this so he can judge whether or not his feigned madness is required any longer. This is a clear sign that Hamlet is in fact only ‘performing’ as a deranged man, hence he is aware and in charge of his psychological status. These occurrences also confirm that Hamlet is an amazingly well educated and aware man.

In Hamlets second soliloquy (Act II, Sc II - L55) he basically questions himself, asking if he is a ‘coward’. He goes on to find himself speaking of Claudius and how he plans to ‘catch his conscience’. This soliloquy is important as it shows Hamlet is beginning to form an obsession with retaliation and revenge for his fathers murder. It is the start of Hamlets inability to transform at his own will from ‘sane’ to ‘insane’. It would appear as though his selfish comments regarding his mind being too weak to cope with the pressure, have ironically been confirmed.

An interesting thing happens during Act III, sc II, that gives the impression Hamlets ‘sane personality’ can be ruthlessly cruel to others in order to gain what he desires.

In this scene, Hamlet appears to be ‘back in love’ with Ophelia, flirting with her after he rejected her advances. Unfortunately for Ophelia this sends her over the edge - all because it aided Hamlet in creating a sense of bamboozling behavior. This aids Hamlet, because he destroys ant theory Claudus or Polonius had for his unknown madness.

This scene occurs at the opening of Hamlets adaptatious play, with Hamlet appearing to be excited and eager to witness Claudius’ reaction. Hamlet, in a jestive yet educated manner, commentates the occurrences on the stage to Ophelia. It seems as though Hamlet is not concentrating but is surprisingly aware of what is going on. This suggests that he is in a balanced state of sanity and insanity at this integral part of his developing personality.

After Claudius reacts to the trap set by Hamlet (Act III, sc II). Horatio and Hamlet hold counsel regarding what they have witnessed. Hamlet is excited and in definate control of his mental decisions. However, Hamlet rapidly transforms into an inquisitive and hostile manner to his good friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

It should be noted that at this point, Hamlet realises he has slipped into his deranged mind set, and adjusts accordingly. Ironically, only moments later, he is accusing his friends once more. These events show that Hamlet has almost lost entire control of his different personalities. It becomes evident that Hamlet uses his madness as an excuse for his cowardice after Claudius’ soliloquy during Act III sc III. Hamlet sees Claudius praying, providing a golden opportunity to commit his revenge, but denies it due to Claudius’ apparent vulnerable state. This indicates that Hamlet is inconsistent with his courage, letting pusillanimity take over the control instead, when action needs to be done. Hamlet creates a poor excuse in madness, which evidently is a reason for his eventual sustained insanity.

A very obvious argument follows up the play, with Hamlet exploding at his mother Gertrude. (Act III sc IV) He confronts his inner conflict in the process, and with a murderous twist kills a spying Polonius. After realizing it was in fact Polonius he has killed, Hamlet shows no sign of repentance, passing it off as something ‘‘the everlasting’’ wanted. Throughout this conversation Hamlet slips in and out of his personalities, finally leaving in his ‘sane’ mind set. Amazingly enough, Hamlet goes on to continue his cunning, if somewhat mysterious plan. He tells Gertrude to play along with his act, proving Polonius was correct in saying Hamlet has method in his madness.

Gertrude succumbs to Hamlets wishes (Act IV sc I) playing along with his act to Claudius. She describes Hamlet as being ‘Mad as the sea and wind…’ to a sympathetic if somewhat disturbed Claudius. This favour completed by Gertrude, shows that she must believe that Hamlet is not a natural faker, because if Gertrude can tell he is not acting in a pretense manner, then surely he is not a natural faker.

Hamlet takes the final step into insanity and derangement when, during Act IV sc II, he refers to himself in a third person. Hamlet says: ‘‘What noise? who calls on Hamlet ?...’’ regarding the arrival of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Killing Polonius was the final step for Hamlet. Madness, fear and adrenaline take over any resistance offered by the normal, or sane part of Hamlet. He has no longer the ability to change between ‘mad’ and ‘normal’ - he is now a madman.


In conclusion, Hamlet is not a natural faker, but a cowardly man, so intelligent that madness was the only way he could evade the pressure he believed he was under. His slow evolvement into madness originally was a sophisticated way of gaining revenge for his fathers death, and as an excuse for his cowardice. His personal characteristics also changed, going from a well liked confident, outgoing scholar, to being disliked and paranoid. He is an insidious actor and uses this to his advantage by creating a sense of puzzlement and confusion in Claudius’ head.

‘Do not pull an ugly face, for if the wind changes, you will stay like that for ever. This old saying is relevant to Hamlet’s growth, as the wind changed whilst he was acting out his feigned madness

I still remember that sad summer day when my storybook life came crashing down. I was washing the mound of dishes that stacked up daily in our kitchen. I didn't mind the dishes because half the time was spent splashing in the water making giant soapy bubbles that were fun to pop. My clothes usually got drenched, but that was okay.

What she did say was that we needed to have a family meeting. We always dreaded the long boring meetings talking about chores and manners and such, but I was dreading this one much more. Our house was always a disaster. It had four bedrooms and two huge bathrooms. It was a never-ending chore. No matter how much we cleaned, it didn’t seem to matter. Or even more important, who would we live with? How would my mom be able to work, cook, help with homework, get us to our activities and deal with her loss? It was extremely hard going to school every single day knowing when I got home life would be the same cruel reality. No matter how much I prayed my life was never going back the way it was.

Although the divorce was hard for each and every one of us, my younger sister, Micaiah, took it the worst. I can remember her crying many times during the night and day, but she eventually she understood and tried to show the family she was brave.

I was the eldest with three younger siblings. Sam was 10, Micaiah was 4, and Matthew who was hardly 1 months old. Sam and I were closest to age. We both could understand what was going on but didn’t know it would be so tough. Sam and I always got a long fairly well. We were always playing card games such as Old Maid and Match. We would also keep car collections and show off who had the better ones. We naturally we turned towards each other for company.

My brother Matthew at the time wasn’t even years old yet, so he did not know what was going on and probably can’t even recall for himself what happened to this day. In the years, he eventually caught on with the story and he now understands what divorce is and why it happens.

Mom tried her best, but sometimes, actually a lot of the time, she was unable to take care of the four of us. She had so many things on her mind at once. Because I was oldest of her kids, I stepped up to the plate and helped with the little ones. We all missed dad and the way it had been but we were making the best of a bad situation. I remember comforting my infant brother back to sleep in the middle of the night even though that was Mom's job. She was often far too fatigued to even hear him crying in the night. I couldn’t blame her though. Its not that she didn't care about us, its just that the divorce was probably much more devastating to her. Sharing your life and raising children with someone you loved then have it turn for the worst can’t be easy to handle. She could function normally at work, but not so much at home. My mom was always a strong woman who, in my mind, could do anything. I was proven wrong in this instance. She would cry a lot and she seemed so weak and ready to give up. That was hard on me because I needed her to be strong for me and be there for me. My life was scrambled too. I was growing into a young woman and needed a parent, especially a mother, to teach me what I needed to know about growing up.

Today, I can say, “We survived!”

When I look back on that part of my life I am saddened but also appreciative. I am a much stronger person because of the hardships that we had to overcome as a family, as well as my own hardships of turning into a young woman. I have a compassionate side of me for people that I may not have had if I hadn't gone through such difficulties of my own. If I hear about someone else’s difficulties with family life, I feel for them because I know a great deal of what they are going through.

I feel I have learned many lessons along this bumpy road. Some lessons maybe others haven’t learned yet, and some that many never will learn. I am more considerate to others and I don’t have a lot of trust towards people I first meet, which I don’t know if it’s a good thing or bad but I know it has helped me in some situations as I grew up.

My mother is happily married a good man I am proud to call my step dad. He loves her unconditionally and shows it every day. My siblings are very happy. We all made it and are actually in a better situation than ever before. I still love my dad and always will, but he is the one who caused our heartbreak by his wrong actions. He is the one who lost not us.
