American Political Parties

The primary purpose of American political parties is to offer the voting public a choice. Each party tries to identify itself in a way that will attract a majority support. Competition between political parties is the basis of the public’s influence through elections. The party is the one institution that develops broad policy and leadership choices. The party then presents the choices and policies to the voting public to accept or reject. This process is what gives the citizens an opportunity through elections, to influence how they will be governed.

A political party is a continuing association of interests jointed together in an effort to get its candidates elected for public office under a common label. There are three parts to each party. First there is the party in the electorate, which is voters who identify with it and support its candidates. The other two parts to each party are the party as organization, which is staffed and led by party activists, and the party as candidates, which consists of those individual who run for public office under its label.

Political parties give direction and strength to the people’s votes. Through their numbers, citizens have the potential for great influence, but that potential cannot be realized unless they have the facility to act together. Parties give citizens that capacity. When Americans are at the polls they have a choice between the Republican and Democratic parties. This narrows the options to two and in the process enables people with different opinions to submit a common judgment. In electing a party, the voters choose its candidates, it philosophy, and its policies over those of the opposing party.
