Trip to Senate

My trip to senate together with my classmates was very thrilling. I never knew the location of the Senate House not until last October 8, 2000. I was very anxious to go to the Senate Building. It was my first time to be there and to see how our senators proceeded with a session.

Inside the Session Hall, I’ve noticed three symbols of authority Seal of the Senate, the Mace of the Senate and the gavel. The seal symbolizes the function of the Senate. The mace is the symbol of authority of the Senate. The mace is an essential part of the symbol of the Senate. Without it, the Senate is not considered to be properly constituted. When the Senate is in session, the mace is displayed at the Senate President’s platform. If not, it is kept under the custody of the Sergeant-at-Arms. The gavel is used by the President of the Senate for commanding attention whenever the Senate is in session or when they are about to have a recess.

I’ve noticed that at the start of the session, we couldn’t understand what Sen. Pres. Drilon was saying. He was like murmuring or eating his words. Then during the session, most of the senators were not attentively listening to Sen. Arroyo and Sen. Angara… especially the group of Sen. Oreta. How could the people learn to respect them if they themselves do not respect each other? If only most of the Filipino people could see what their elected senators were doing…then maybe they’ll regret electing them in office (Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!). I expected too much from the senators.

Visiting the Senate House was not that frustrating…at least we got to meet some senators and even got a picture with them. They are Sen. Arroyo, Sen. Biazon, Sen. Pimentel, Sen. Lacson, Sen. Flavier and Sen. Legarda. Somehow, our trip to senate rewarding.

When the picture taking was over, one old photographer said, “Ang susunod na presidente ay isang pulis. Pag-aaralan nyo pamahalaan ni Macoy, ni Cory, ni Tabako at si GMA…ang susunod ay isang Pulis.” I didn’t get that part…but maybe there’s a pattern on who’ll be the next president. On our way back to St. Scho, we unintentionally interviewed the taxi driver regarding Lacson being the president, he said “Ok naman sya eh. Ang laki ng natulong nya sa mga driver. Nawala ung mga nangongotong na pulis nung sya ung nakaupo.” But I was more bothered by what the old man said. It only leave me one question in mind…”What’s our country coming to?”
