William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare is unlike any actor, poet, or playwright of all time. He occupies a unique position in the art of literature. No writers’ reputation can even compare with the famous William Shakespeare’s. Though his plays were written in the late 16th century early 17th century, they are currently read and performed more often in more countries than ever before. Many could say that he was not great of an age, but great of all time. Few facts are known about William, we know he was baptized on April 6, 1564. William Shakespeare was born in April 1564, and lived his life as a young child in the market town of Stratford upon-Avon. Of eight children, he was the eldest son of John Shakespeare, a locally prominent merchant. Later on in his life, he lead a professional life in London, only to return to Stratford as a wealthy landowner. He died there in April , 1616 and was buried in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church according to the epitaph recorded on his chest.

Records of the Stratford grammar school did not survive, so no proof that William attended this school exists. Stratford Grammar school, at the time, had a reputation to rival Eton. At age eighteen, William married in 1558 to a woman named Ann Hathaway. In 1558 they had a baby girl who the named Susanna, and later gave birth to two twins named Judith and Hamnet in 1585. Where they lived and how they were supported still remains an unknown fact. However, we do know that be the time 15 had come, William had achieved some prominence as an actor and playwright in London. While Shakespeare wrote narrative poems theatres were closed because of the plague. The plague was a contagious epidemic disease that slit through the population of London like a knife. It was believed and most likely true that the plague was spread in theatres. Many people stood or sat close together and if one person had this epidemic, they may pass it on to a nearby person.

In the 1550’s he wrote his plays on English History, along with at least two tragedies and several comedies. In 1596 his son Hamnet died and he wrote Hamlet on his behalf. In 1599 Shakespeare’s company built a theatre located across the river from London, that they called the Globe Theatre. Aside from the Globe Theatre William’s plays were also performed in court for Queen Elizabeth and some were performed at the Inns of the Court. Some were performed at universities, in other towns, and even at great households.

After 1561 he wrote very little and in 1561 the globe theatre burned down during a performance of Henry VIII. Seven years after William died his collected plays were published as Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies.
