The issue claims that people who are firmly committed to an idea or policy are the same people who are most critical about that idea or policy. At first thought this statement appears to be true, but careful scrutiny of historical examples reveals that for every historical case supporting the issues claim there are many others serving to refute it. Thus, as per my opinion, the assertion of statement must be determined on a case-by-case basis. For instance, the people who claim that they have a deep knowledge about certain idea or policy should have cognizance about its drawbacks, flaws and many other problems in it. A firm commitment to an idea or policy requires full confidence in it and confidence is gained only when you are aware of its weaknesses. At this point it seems that commitment and criticism are mutually exclusive. Nevertheless, in some cases this claim is valid while in some cases it is not. In support to the issue, there are many historical cases where both commitment and criticism seems to appear for same idea or policy. For example, Edward Teller, so called father of atom bomb, was in favor of not using his technology for any kind of destruction and in contrast atomic power is developed for the purpose of total devastation. Moreover, many political leaders, who claim that they believe in peace and well being of the country and used to quote denizens to abhor war wherever they find it, are mostly the cause of originating the war. Conversely, in historical examples there are also innumerable influential individuals who were zealously committed to certain idea or policy but who were not critical of it. For example, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, historys two leading pilots who were against of tyranny and racism, were firm with their ideas and policy. They were seriously committed to their mission and not in stance to criticize it. To my knowledge, no private writing of any of these historical figures lends any support to the claim that these leaders were particularly critical of their own ideas or policies.

The passages of the Tao Te Ching were a deep challenge for me. The Way of Life for the Taoist is put forth very plainly in the second passage of number 48. “By letting go, it all gets done; The world is won by those who let it go! But when you try and try; The world is then beyond the winning.” I believe Taoism is based on conforming to life around you. Not trying to change your circumstances but give in to them and let nature take its course. It was very important to me to understand the Way according to Taoism in order to complete this assignment. I read and reread these passages over and over until the message of number 48 hit me. The rest of my essay will be based on this concept.

The passages of the Tao Te Ching given for this assignment can be grouped into three categories. They consist of the Way itself, the Way and people, and the Way and society.

Passages 1 and 4 characterize the Way. In Passage 1, the Way is stated as being nameless and uncharted. Nameless and uncharted means unknown, but by surrendering to the unknown, the Way can still be found and experienced. The Way is “secret.” The Taoists didn’t believe that desire and longing was a part of conforming. Covetousness can cloud your thinking and if you are not careful, you’ll only see what’s on the outside and miss the beauty that is deep within.

In Passage 4, the Way is “a void, used but never filled; an abyss it is, like an ancestor from which all things come.” I don’t look at this as never being filled to the point of being used up, but as constantly being used but never needing to be re-filled. Like our heritage, it will always be there. The Way, takes the edge out of sharpness, fixes things we might be ensnared in, balances light, and gives peace in times of unrest. All of things can be accomplished by adapting to the situation and “letting go.” The Way is “A deep pool, never to run dry!” Similar to the first verse, it is always there and will never run out as long as you use it. The third verse alludes to a Tao belief in God. The Way is precious to them. They don’t know if it is from God, but it is an introduction to God. Passages 1 and 4 give a lot of insight as to what the Way is, but how did the Taoists apply these characteristics to their everyday existence? This question will be answered as we look at the other passages.

Passages 1, 8, 46, 48, and 56 are concerned with the manifestation of the Way in a man’s life. How does the Way look when it is applied to the day-to-day existence of man? Passage 1 says being favored brings trouble. A high rank is equivalent to selfishness. If a man focuses more on others and their well being, then he wouldn’t suffer.

Passages 8 and 46 have elements for both individuals and society. Because of the underlying theme in these passages, I have placed them in the third category of the Way and society as well. For this point, I am only looking at it as it applies to how a man should live. In verse one of passage 8, we find that a truly virtuous man will not put his righteousness on display for all to see. He is at peace and the fruit of his life is proof of his goodness. A man with very little virtue will never miss a chance to parade his righteousness around. His virtue is false and means nothing. In passage 46, we see that a man should be contented. It is a grave error to be covetous, envious, and discontented. This alludes to a simple life and being at peace with whatever situation you are in.

Passage 48, is the essence of Taoism. The student of the Way learns slowly day by day. In order to gain the Way, he must lose himself. When all of himself is gone, he is at peace. In order to attain the Way, a man must become totally selfless. By letting go of his circumstances, and accepting them, becoming one with them, he has reached the Path of Life - a quite, simple, peaceful existence.

Passage 56 is similar to the statement of virtue. If a man has reached the Way, he doesn’t need to tell everyone. The proof is in the living of his life. If a man boasts of finding the Way, you can bet he hasn’t. This passage also appears to be a call to the Path of Life. That concept doesn’t seem to fit. I don’t believe Taoists would be actively recruiting followers. From the last part of the verse, “In which the Wise Man is moved, Neither by affection, Nor yet by estrangement, Or profit or loss, Or honor or shame, Accordingly, by all the world, He is held highest.” The man who has found the Way is not concerned with anything else. He doesn’t care if he is loved or hated, separated from family, is honored or put to shame. He has found the Way. He will help someone who asks find the Way, but I don’t believe he would be about evangelizing.

Passages 18, 8, and 46 deal primarily with the Way and what happens to the world without it. These passages can be confusing because they talk about what would happen if the Way was lost or forgotten. In passage 18 it says if the Way fades away “then came kindness and morality. When wisdom and intelligence appeared they brought with them a great hypocrisy.” I don’t think the Taoists thought these attributes were bad in of themselves, but the use of them in certain contexts to be a bad thing. They were either false or forced. They believed the Way should be flowing through a person and manifested naturally.

Passage 8 is very similar to 18. “When virtue is lost, then compassion sets in. “Compassion at its best consists in honest deeds;” Morality at its best is deliberate. Then you have etiquette, which forces a man to do what is right. In this passage that Taoists state that at their very best, these attributes are not enough to set you on the Path of Life. In fact, if the way is lost or forgotten, eventually an outer shell of what is good and right will take its place and then chaos will set in. It is apparent that Taoists are not high on etiquette because as I stated earlier, the Path of Life should be naturally flowing through a person and not forced.

As stated in passage 46, “no sin can exceed, no calamity’s worse, no omen more dreadful” than envy, discontentment, or covetousness. Without the Way, war and malcontent grow among the people. With the Way, all is peaceful and everyone is content.

The Taoist had a very simple way to live. They believed in conforming to nature and life. They should live selfless, and without favor. They should be content. Compassion, kindness, morality, and virtue should flow freely through them. Life should be peaceful. To the Taoist, the Path of Life did not consist of selfishness, high rank, envy, or discontentment. It should not have a desire for war. Virtue, etiquette, compassion, and morality should not be forced. A man must not try to change the laws of nature, but accept them.

The main difference between Taoism and Confucianism is the conforming to nature and circumstances of the Taoists and the evolving of a person’s character by Confucius.

Confucius believed the Way could be taught or learned according to a person’s character knowledge and goals. The Taoists didn’t believe the Way could be taught but had to be found. As we look at passage 4 verse , “a deep pool it is, Never to run dry!” It is always there waiting to be used, but you have to find it.

Confucius believed in a proper societal order and that study and knowledge were better than meditation and fasting. This can be found in Book 5 of the his Analects “I once spent all day thinking without taking food and all night thinking without going to bed, but I found that I gained nothing from it. It would have been better for me to have spent the time in learning.”

The Taoists believed in a peaceful, simple, conforming existence. They were more into learning from experience and selflessness. The main example here is passage 48, “The student learns by daily increment. The Way is gained by daily loss, loss upon loss until at last comes rest. By letting go, it all gets done; the world is won by those who let go! But when you try and try the world is then beyond the winning.” The Taoists were critical of Confucius because of his belief you can change your circumstances. The Taoists believed it was not possible and better to change yourself. Who is right?

A seemingly persistent problem is the controversial issue of transplanting organs. There are many reasons why so many people are against transplants. However, there are many coinciding reasons why so many people are for the idea of transplants. You need to focus on several aspects of the entire situation. Is the distribution of these donated organs being fair and ethnical? Is using animal’s organs for transplants a part of animal cruelty? Should donors be paid for their service? Is it okay to sell organs on the black market? Are famous people given “special treatment” for their fame?

One of the main problems that is frequently questioned is how does transplants put a strain on peoples ethnics. To donate an organ, is it truly always a volunteer thing, or do the donors somewhat feel pressured? I believe either way, pressured or not pressured, transplants are very necessary. Understandably I am sure that there are times when a person feels pressured into donating, but the reward of saving some ones life must be the best feeling in the world. For example, you are unsure whether or not you wanted to give your sister your kidney, how would you feel if she died because you were too stubborn to give it up. I’m sure it is a rather hard decision, you would have to undergo a surgery and there always some risks involved. But sometimes you need to be pushed in order to make a good decision. If the possible donor felt that strongly about not being able to go through with the surgery their own conscience wouldn’t allow them to go through with the operation no matter what.

Another frequent argument is if the distribution of the organs is fair and has a strict system of rules. There was some question whether or not Mickey Mantle’s operation occurred so quickly because he was a national figure. Operations and transplants go on frequently but his made front-page news. It has been clarified that Mantle’s quick receive of a donor was because he was very sick. In the process of finding a person a donor several aspects are looked at. People on the transplant lists are ranked by their level of sickness. Granted it did sound sketchy that Mickey Mantle’s were met quite quickly. But the man was very ill. Him being famous had no increase in the urgency of his transplant. To the doctors he was just another person in need of a liver transplant.

Being a donor is a very unpopular thing these days. Meaning donated organs are very scarce. Because of the lack of organs we have turned to the use of animals. A heart was taken from a baboon to give to a dying newborn baby. Was this against the animal’s rights? Is it unjust for us to kill animals to save humans? While many animal right leaders will argue yes, I must say no. It was said that the animals used are ones registered for experiments anyway. However this does sound cruel and horribly upsetting but would you rather keep your own Mother alive or save your dogs life? As strongly as I am against the use of animals in labs for research, I would easily choose my Mother over my pet cat. It has become so bad that people have been abusing the privilege of their organs. A person sold a liver on the black market for 10,000. It has been contemplated whether or not donors should get paid. We are in such a short supply and it is ridiculous a sick dying person must shell out 10 grand in order to live. I think if we pay people who donate we could attract more volunteers and save more lives.

Transplants are a very hard and delicate surgery. It is absolutely necessary that each recipient be tended to with their specific transplanted organ. So why shouldn’t we do everything in our power in order to save these people? No matter how unethical or maybe even cruel can you really put a price on a person’s life? Yes, it is wrong to slaughter animals in order to use their organs but is it really slaughter? The animals are donated to science, why not use them to save maybe your son or daughter's life.

The Origin of the Italian Mafia in America

The Mafia, the syndicate, the mob, whatever you choose to call it, has been part of America ever since the Italians emigrated here from the island of Sicily. Many Italians came to America to pursue a better life, being happy, and having stability. For others, the drive for power, fame, and success was too alluring to ignore.
In the late eighteen hundreds, many of the new Italians to America went to New Orleans. It was a quick pace life there with gambling, prostitution, and bootlegging. Soon after, most large cities had its own Mafia chapter. “Fleeing Italians from Sicily were well aware that there was money to be made in the United States through extortion, prostitution, gambling and bootlegging”. Many other people also went to New York City, just because they didn’t have to wait that long to start looking for work. Most of the Mafia Families you hear of are in New York because that is where many Italians went. Some Italians also went to Boston because like New York it is right on the harbor and they did not have to go far to find work.

Though not widely known throughout the United States until the nineteen twenties they have been here for much longer. Italians came here for many reasons but the number one reason was to escape the life they had in Italy. When the Italians got to New York the Irish had most of the control over much of the business in the parts where the Italians lived. It came down to the Italians against the Irish. Italians won that fight because there is one special thing that binds the Mafia together, family. “Italian organized crime differs from others in one important aspect they are organized around the family. Loyalty and confidentiality reside with relatives and the bonds are much stronger than those in other ethnic groups”. The Italians believe that if the ability to rely absolutely on one’s family, blood, or Mafia, is lacking successful fulfillment of the mission is not possible.

As the years past, many Italians became known for their association with top Mafia men. “Perhaps the most famous figure from prohibition is Al “Scarface” Capone, who dominated the Chicago bootlegging underground world”. Capone grew up in the Italian neighborhood of New York City. That is where he first got involved with mob activities. Acquainted with many men in his time in New York, it was Charles Luciano who took him under his wing and had him part of The Five Points Gang. Just a Mafia crew. Charles Luciano was another man who was known for being in the Mafia. “Charles Luciano, trained in the Five Points Gang, leader John Torrio”. Though never an initiated member of the Mafia, Myer Lansky was close with Charles Luciano and did many deeds for him. During the early years of the Twentieth century, Frankie Yale was the top Mafia man in Brooklyn. Frankie was one of the men that helped get rid of the Irish in New York.

Omerta was the tradition where men were initiated into the Mafia. “The Mafia ritual called “Omerta” originated in Sicily. It is translated as “manhood” but has evovled into the Mafia’s code of silence”. Many years have past and now it is call being “made.” This means they are now allowed to know what the family knows. Omerta is also the code of silence vow that the initiated member takes. In taking this vow, they promise they will never tell what happens within the family. Whether it be to other families or the law enforcement agencies. “Omerta forbids a made man from revealing any details of life in La Cosa Nostra to those outside of the organization”. If a member breaks his vow and discusses life in the Mafia with anybody outside family, especially law enforcement agencies, his penalty is death. Now ex-mobsters do not honor the code of silence and would rather make some money on their story than keep true to the family.

New York was the place for the families to live as the five families Gambino, Genovese, Colombo, Bonanno, and Luchese. Though separately they had their own ways of running the business, they were all under the same values of everyone around. The Gambino Family has had men that you have heard of in the organization such as John Gotti. “Gotti took control of the Gambino family in New York after killing former Don Paul Castellano, who made the mistake of openly trafficking drugs”. The families all originate in New York but are spread all over the country in places like Las Vegas, Miami, and many other big cities.

Power for the Mafia does not come easy. They use violence a lot to get the things they want. Violent actions, is where the Mafia gets its power. The constant drive for power has remained since the beginning. Power allows success and success is what they want any way they can get it. “Violence, and subsequently the mere threat of violence, was the means by which the Mob gained monopoly control over its various criminal enterprises”. The Mafia has a reputation for the use of violence as a means of achieving and maintaining their power. “Violence is used as a method of discouraging and eliminating competitors, while at the same time it reinforces their reputation”. Although they have had many successes most of the things you hear about the Mafia is bad.

Today the word Mafia is used to describe a number of criminal organizations. When people think about organized crime the Mafia always comes to mind. The Mafia has had a role in organized crime for more than one hundred years. “Crime has been around since the dawn of human kind, and organized crime has been around almost as long”. In the early nineteen hundreds, most immigrants that came to America were involved in organized crime. It was not just the Italians. “We hear a lot about crime on the streets but, not too much about organized crime- except when the Mafia comes out for a topic of a movie”. Men that are associated with organized crime know how to keep what they do a secret. “Organized crime rings are shrouded in secrecy and are often difficult to crack”.

With a show like The Sopranos and movies like The Godfather, you get a good idea of what life is like in the Mafia. The Sopranos is the most realistic mob show out there now. It shows life in the mob, and around family, how a man can separate the two and make mends with himself with how he lives his life. While The Godfather shows how life was in the earlier years of the Mafia during WWII. You meet a man Vito Corleone, who came right off the boat from Italy and made something of literally nothing. Vito did not want the Mafia life for his boys but he could not do anything about it. Hollywood does like to change the stories around to make it more appealing to the public, “We see the Mafia in all its sleazy splendor. We meet cast and characters that bear no resemblance to the Corleones”. Movies like Casino and Donny Brasco do not have much of a good effect on the life of a mobster. However, they chose that life. Many ex-mobsters now like to tell their stories to make movies when they swore they would keep their oath.

However, the Mafia has changed greatly since it first started in America they still are run by the same rules, which is stay true to your family. In the early years, there would have never been so many snitches; they knew where to stay true. Now they would rather get money then stay true to the oath they took in their initiation ceremony. As they say “what goes around comes around.” The reason why they came here was to make money. Now their fame and success has the best of them.

PURIFYING WATER

PURPOSE
The purpose of this lab is to see if the student can purify a sample of contaminated water. Our objective is to clean and make the water as clear as possible.

This term for separating solid particles from a liquid by passing the mixture through a material that retains the solid particles is filtration. This is what he is trying to do.

MATERIALS & METHODS

Funnel, Filter Tube, Beaker, stand for funnel, water, oil, sand, lead, cup, rubber band, and rubber tube.

First you get the liquid from the teacher, then you set up the materials you are working with, you need to hold the filter tube at the bottom and pour the liquid through the funnel, then let that sit for at least 5-10 minutes, and then let the filter loose and have your partner hold the beaker and you pour the liquid in from the tube. Make sure there is nothing but water in the beaker.

RESULTS

In result, the experimenter found that when leaving the water sits over night all the elements will have either found their way to the top or bottom of the water. And when straining water through a tube or sand, you can get it to be an alone substance in itself.

CONCLUSION

My conclusion to why the chunks in the water were so easily withdrawn was because when leaving water mixed with chunks they tend to come out of the water and go to the top or bottom of the cup. When draining the water into a beaker or cup you had to take simple precautions like leaving the oil in the test tube and spilling it out, and simply letting the water drain through the sand into the beaker.

Write my Essay on Power of Individual for me

essay writing service

Everyone has an individual power and seem to use it either in a positive or negative way. Power of individual can also use mentally or physically depending on how people use it. Different situation makes different character or person to use their power themselves. In movies it shows how some character uses their power of one in many ways.

Sydney Carlton is an example of Power of Individual, in the movie A Tale of Two Cities. As one of Sydneys power, he utilizes his power to fight for innocent people on the courts to show that they are not guilty. If it weren’t for Sydneys power of attorney, people would have been murdered by using the Guillotine. Sydney Carlton is a great example of Power of Individual because he uses his power of one, to stand up and speak for his prisoners, otherwise they would have been found guilty. Another example was when Sydney Carlton made a decision that is going to sacrifice his life for Charles Darney from getting killed. This shows that he sacrifice his life for Charles Darney by taking the place of Charles. This is important because he fell in love with Charles Darney’s wife, but knowing he can’t be with her he wanted her to be happy so he sacrifice himself for Charles Darney so Charles can stay with his wife. As a result, Sydney Carlton was an example using Power of Individual sacrificing his life for someone he loves to be happy.

Different people uses their individual power differently just like how Harry Potter use it differently. For an example, in the movie of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Lord Voldemort tries kill Harry. This shows that it was Lord Voldemort who tries to kill Harry, but not quite physically kill him and it’s more like playing mind games.

This is important because Harry mentally challenges Lord Voldemort to destroy him. Another example is when Harry fought the serpent down the pipe (Chamber of Secrets). Harry took the risk to fight the serpent to protect the ones he cares about. This is important because he used his power of one physically which was fighting the serpent. As a result, Harry is another example using his power of individual to save many lives from getting paralyzed at Howard’s.

John Keating uses his way of power of individual to influence his students. In the movie Dead Poet’s Society Mr. Keating was telling his class to stand on top of his desk. This shows that he was teaching the class how to see different perspective if you stand up high. This is important because he uses his individual power to encourage the students to stand on top of the desk when they weren’t suppose to. Another example is when Mr. Keating who told Neil to talk to his father about what Neil wanted to do. This shows that Mr. Keating gave an advice to Neil, which was to encourage him to talk to his father. This is important because Mr. Keating influence Neil to talk to his father in a positive way. As a result, John Keating used his power of individual in a positive way to influence his students.

Sydney Carlton, Harry Potter, and John Keating were some great examples on how “Power of Individual” was used. These characters show different ways of using power of one. Depending on any kind of situation many people or character uses their power differently either helping others, sacrificing him or herself, or maybe even harming others.

People who have long-term exposure to exhaust fumes from diesel engines or organic chemicals

Who takes care of the people with this disease?

People with lung cancer mainly have to basically try and survive on there own or with their family. Some people on the other hand are rich enough have nurses to take care of them.

How is this disease treated?

A doctor chooses which treatment the patient receives built on characteristics like the type, place, size and the degree of the tumor (if it will spread or not) and your overall health

Several of the treatments can be used in a combination

The following are the treatments

SURGERY may cure lung cancer. It is used in limited stages of the disease. The type of surgery depends on where the tumor is located in the lung. Some tumors cannot be removed because of their size or location.

DIATION THERAPY is a form of high energy X-ray that kills cancer cells. It is used

In combination with chemotherapy and sometimes with surgery

It usually offers relief from pain or blockage of the airways.

CHEMOTHERAPY is the use of drugs that are effective against cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be injected directly into a vein or given through a catheter, some chemotherapy drugs are taken by pill. Chemotherapy may be used

Can be used in conjunction with surgery.

In more advanced stages of the disease to relieve symptoms.

Can be used In all stages of small cell cancer.

How does Lung Cancer affect the person?

The affected person would experience another symptom is chest, shoulder or back pain, which feels like a constant ache that may or may not be related to coughing. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, fatigue, repeated pneumonia or bronchitis, coughing up blood, hoarseness, or swelling of the neck and face. There may also be symptoms that do not seem to be at all related to the lungs. These may be caused by the spread of lung cancer to other parts of the body. Depending on which organs are affected, symptoms can include headaches, weakness, pain, bone fractures, bleeding, or blood clots.

Genetics

• Family history of lung cancer may play a role in increasing susceptibility to this disease

• People with parents or siblings with respiratory tract cancers had a 10% higher risk for lung cancer than people without a family history

• Women with mothers or sisters with lung cancer had triple the risk

How prevalent is lung cancer?

• Lung cancer is Americas number-three killer. It is responsible for one in seven deaths, or close to 5,000 each year White males deaths are decreasing but African American and among African American and White females are rising

What countries or populations have this disease?

About every single country on earth (that is inhabited) have had people die from lung cancer, about 5.4 million, 4 percent of, African American adults smoked cigarettes, approximately 1 percent of the 46.5 million adult smokers in the U.S. On average, African Americans tend to smoke brands with higher nicotine and tar levels. African Americans are also more likely to smoke mentholated cigarettes. An estimated 45,000 African Americans die from smoking-related diseases yearly. smoking has declined among the white non-Hispanic population, tobacco companies have targeted both African Americans and Hispanics with intensive merchandising, which includes billboards, advertising in media oriented to these communities, and sponsorship of civic groups and athletic, cultural, and entertainment events

What type of research is being done with lung cancer?

The research that is going on with lung cancer right now is the HER /neu/C-erB and the EGFR.

HER /neu/C-erB gene is normally residing on long arm of chromosome #17 and produces HER protein ( 185 kDa ) interacting with Tyrosine Kinase, ( an enzyme ) and help cells to divide and grow. From recent study, 5 % of lung cancer had this gene amplified. The amplification of the HER /neu gene causes HER protein to be overproduced, so, cause the lung cancer cells to divide and increase in size very quickly. In order to combat this type of lung cancer, the scientists made monoclonal antibody specifically against HER protein. EGFR (Epithelial Growth Factor Receptor) gene.

This EGFR gene is normally residing on long arm of chromosome #7 and produces EGFR protein associated with Tyrosine Kinase Enzyme and functions as promoter to help cells to divide and grow. Over expression of EGFR gene will result in overproduction of EGFR protein, therefore making lung cancer cells to divide and grow faster. Monoclonal antibody against EGFR protein can be made and used for treatment of lung cancer cells that are over expressed by the EGFR protein.

Where is the disease being researched?

Where the disease is being researched is the United States and Europe but currently the treatment is being tested in the US and Europe but the researcher hope to bring it to Thailand.

How is it detected?

• chronic cough

• hoarseness

• coughing up blood

• weight loss & loss of appetite

• shortness of breath

• fever without known reason

• wheezing

• repeated bouts of bronchitis

• chest pain

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a prominent president who was reelected for a third and fourth term. His rd and 4th term was dominated by the Second World War. FDR has been known for his many policies concerning social areas, as well as foreign and militaristic during his rd and 4th term. President Roosevelt primarily had in mind protecting the welfare of the public, however many of actions were not ethically correct. Although many of FDR’s policies can be considered tactfully intelligent, they were not always morally justifiable.

The public’s welfare had been protected through many militaristic policies which were created during his presidency. For example, in 1940, the Selective Training and Service Act which has also been known as the Burke-Wadsworth Bill was a peacetime program of compulsory military service in the United States. This act provided for the legislation of all men between the ages of 1 and 5, for one year of training. The first registration which occurred on October 16 resulted in the listing of over 16,400,000 men. This act was created for the protection of the welfare, and a position taken by FDR for preparedness. Through this peacetime draft, Roosevelt created a sense of “preparedness”. In addition, this program led to the creation of an army that would be equipped to fight if the time came for the United States to enter the war. Also, Roosevelt created a shoot-on-sight policy. This policy was enacted when a German U-boat attacked the U.S. Destroyer Greer. When this news reached Roosevelt, he told the country over his fireside chats that a shoot-on-policy would be declared due to this attack created by the Germans. The Americans no longer felt that they were neutral. This in turn led to eliminating the Act of Neutrality of 1930. As a result of removing the neutrality act, merchant ships could be legally armed, and could enter the combat areas with munitions for Britain. This act protected the United States from German attacks. Roosevelt said in his fireside chat, “It is now clear that Hitler has begun his campaign to control the seas by ruthless force and by wiping out every vestige of international law and humanity. His intention has been made clear. The American people can have no further illusions about it… The sole responsibility rests upon Germany. There will be no shooting unless Germany continues to seek it.” This is an informed decision which is justifiable on Roosevelt’s part because it protected the American people. In addition, he did not look to create a shooting war; all he wanted to do was protect the American people.

Foreign affairs also aided in protecting the welfare of people. A policy created by Roosevelt was the Lend-Lease Act which was created in 1941. This act was drawn up to offset the exhaustion of British credits for the purchase of war supplies. This measure was passed by both Senate and the House. It allowed any country whose defense was deemed vital by President Roosevelt to receive arms and other supplies by sale, transfer, exchange or lease during the course of the war. The total lend lease aid during the war amounted to approximately 50,6,845,87. In addition, on March 15, President Roosevelt promised an increase in the amount of aid to the Allies for a total victory. This act was both intelligent as well as morally correct. It aided the allies with weapons and other equipment necessary in defeating the enemies without entering the war. This was a witty move made by Roosevelt since it aided the allies specifically Britain, but did not make the United States enter the war. Also, Roosevelt created this act to protect the public and maintain its state of neutrality. The Act of Chapultepec was created in 1945 as a regional security agreement binding for the duration of the war. This act was created at the Inter-American Conference of Problems of War and Peace. This act stated that aggression upon one American state would be regarded as aggression against all and specified the “use of armed force” to prevent future aggression. This act was intelligent on FDR’s part in that it created alliances and united the allies together in protecting one another. This is morally just since it allowed power in numbers, and strengthened the allies to prevent aggression.

Roosevelt’s social policies such as the Alien Registration Act created on June 8, 1940 strengthened the existing laws concerning the admission and deportation of aliens. It also required the fingerprinting of all aliens in the United States. This measure was created to check as well as prevent rebellious activities. It was intelligent since it made it unlawful for any person to advocate the overthrowing of government or destroying them. It also prevented individuals from organizing or becoming a member of any group which is dedicated to teaching such ideas. Roosevelt promoted a Committee on Fair Employment Practice on June 5, 1941. This was created by Roosevelt through an Executive Order (No. 880). Roosevelt stated, “Whereas it is the policy of the United States to encourage full participation in the national defense program by all the citizens of the United States regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin…Now, therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the statutes…I do hereby reaffirm the policy of the United States that here shall be no discrimination in the employment of workers in defense industries or government because of race, creed, color, or national origin…” This order in turn created the Fair Employment Practices Committee. This committee was created to promote the fullest employment of all available persons and eliminate discriminatory employment practices. This executive order was a clever move made by Roosevelt since it aided those who had been discriminated from many jobs. This order is justifiable because it made way for fair employment for all individuals. In another Executive Order made by Roosevelt established the office of Defense Health and Welfare Services. This office was created on September, 1941 to assure adequate health and welfare services to meet the needs of the national defense program. The rights of citizens were denied when Executive Order was put through on the days which followed the Japanese attack upon Pearl Harbor. The United States were unable to strike back effectively against the Japanese Empire. As a result, Americans in the Western states to lashed out against their fellow Japanese citizens. This executive order signed by FDR on February 1, 1941 allowed military commanders to designate areas “from which any or all persons may be excluded.” Under this order, all the Japanese were forced to leave and go to “relocation centers.” By the end of 1942, more than 110,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry among which two thirds were native-born citizens were put in internment camps. The truth can be seen through this intolerable experience. This event proved that laws created may not always be sufficient. The Writ of Habeas Corpus, and the Fifth Amendment which states that no person should be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, were both neglected under military action. Morally, this order had placed aside the idea conveyed in the constitution and resulted in many innocent lives being placed in these internment camps due to their ancestry. Roosevelt attempt to safeguard the public was indeed a good idea; however placing innocent Japanese lives in internment was morally wrong and unjust.

Roosevelt dies 1945; he soon came to be looked at as a gallant and crafty president who led the nation safely through two of the worst crisis. The Great Depression and World War II. Roosevelt’s policies were intelligent ideas. However, the way he went about accomplishing some of them specifically the Japanese and relocating them was morally unjust. Though he was successful in organizing the country for a victory in World War II, and won admiration of many his mistake with the internment program will forever be branded upon him.

Agriculture is a major part of our lifestyle today. Without it, we probably would not have many of the features available to us today. Agriculture is the basis of all civilization, the basis of writing, of cities and towns, of our governing systems, of our technology, of almost everything we have.

Humans started off with a nomadic lifestyle. Humans, or homo sapiens, used to follow around animals, wherever they went, to hunt them. If the animals moved, the humans followed. No one had ever thought of growing their own food, until one day someone probably accidently left some seeds of a fruit they were eating on the ground, which grew. Homo sapiens with their creative brains figured out that the seeds make the food grow.

Over hundreds of years of trial and error with the human’s new-found food source, they began to realize things like plants need water to grow, plants only grow in certain seasons, etc. Humans then realized they needed to grow crops near a river, where all the fertile soil is, thus creating agriculture.

Once man figured out how to grow his own food, he could grow it in surplus amounts. Other humans saw this, and gave what they could offer to the farmer for food, thus creating trade. When everyone started trading, they moved in closer to the farmer. The farmer lived next to the river, for the rich soil, and everyone else around him. This created cities and towns. Of course, these cities and towns got very big, having mass amounts of people living near each other at the same time. It is a natural tendency for humans to get irritable with each other, when living so close. So, someone had to step in and make up a set of rules for everyone, thus creating a system of government.

Since the farmers supplied the food for everyone, they no longer spent all of their time hunting. Therefore humans have more time to experiment and toy around with things. One of these humans eventually became a blacksmith like figure, another became a tanner, another became a carpenter and so forth. Each one of these groups of people could then perfect their art. The longer the carpenter built, the better he got, the more he could make. Since everyone was trading so much, they needed a way to record everything. The government needed a solid way to keep the laws recorded also. So, writing was invented. With the invention of writing, government, cities and towns and trade, cities became larger, and started making surplus amounts of food, and other goods. With this happening, the people could then trade with other civilizations. When they did this, a theory called “Cultural Diffusion” happened. Cultural diffusion is basically when one group of people watch another and see things they like, and try to mimic those things. Therefore the best of both cultures is shared. With all of these events happening, humans were able to make more and more technological advances.

Through all of this, it led us to where we are today. That just goes to show how much we take our world for granted. So, without agriculture we do not have trade, cities and towns, government, or even writing. Think about that the next time you eat your veggies…

What were you doing August 11th? I was at Six Flags with my two friends, Gen, and Jon. We had fun riding the rides and laughing at Jon. Six Flags was twice as fun because I was there with my friends. I hope my birthday next year is just as good.

I ended up getting my favorite stuffed animal at the park. The three of us sat down to play a pig race. I won, and chose a Kermit doll. Later, I was playing Pump it Up Extreme, and Gen and Jon were trying to mess me up. I took Kermit and threw him on the ground, causing his eyes to fly off, and other people’s eyes to be on us. Jon then tied said Kermit to himself. Then, he jumped on the sidewalk, rolled on the ground, and pretended that Kermit was attacking him. Now we know that Kermit was built tough, due to the abuse he was put through that day.

Before we left, we had some cookie cake. It had Cookie Monster on it, because ever since I was four, I’ve decided that C is for cookie, and that’s good enough for me. We also ate half a dozen cookies for dinner. While at Six Flags, Jon got cheese filled breadsticks. He then made loud sound affects of him eating. The cheese filled breadsticks were the best.

We had the most fun riding rides, despite the fact that Jon didn’t want to ride anything big. Gen and I rode on all the big rides together. On the rides that we all went on, Jon would yell funny stuff. We ended up forcing him onto the Dizzy Lizzie, and Cat Woman’s Whip. He said he didn’t mind going on them, and yelled excitedly about vomiting afterward. Our favorite ride was an educational ride about Jean Lafitte, during which we snickered at funny peoples names, and Jon taught us how to be obnoxious in front of large groups of people. Gen decided it would be cool to bungee jump. We didn’t, and watched from afar. We had a dandy time.

My birthday was one of the best days of my life. I don’t know anyone funnier than Jon. I still can’t believe Gen bungee jumped. I think the Jocco will never be the same. I’m really glad that that day happened. It’s a day that will live in infamy. Heck, we still quote Jon to this day!

Always There

As I slept in my comfy, warm bed, I was awakened to a roar of cries. I got up quickly and ran to my mother, who was also crying. I asked her.

“Mom what happened, what’s going on? Why is everyone crying?”

She replied.

“It would be better if you didn’t know what has happened.”

I didn’t want to argue with her, I just wanted to know why everyone was crying so I decided to go and ask my father. So, I ran to my father, who was sitting in the corner of the room, staring at the floor with the look of dismay on his face and tear drops running down his face as if rain drops falling from his eyes. I asked my father.

“Dad, please tell me what has happened? What’s going on and why is mom crying and why are you crying?’

As he looked up and gently wiped his tears he replied.

“Son,  your grandmother passed away.”

I didn’t want to believe him. I ran to my grandmother's room and saw my dad's brothers and their families just sitting there crying. As I walked through the crowd, my heart got somewhat heavy, as if someone had put a-ton of weight on my it. As I finally reached the bed of my grandmother I saw her just laying there motionless. So I got down on my knees and shook her a little to wake her up. She looked as if she would get up right this minute and hug me. But she never did. As I looked at her face with her rosy cheeks and a gentle smile on her face tears began to pour out of my eyes. Then I realized that I had lost my best friend. That was the worst day of my life.

It all began on a beautiful sunny morning, clear blue sky, not a cloud in site. Kids playing out in the streets, birds singing everywhere. But who knew that such a beautiful day can bring such suffering to ones family. That was the day my grandmother passed away. Such a beautiful day was the worst day of my life. My life was completely shattered. My grandmother and I were very close. She would do anything possible just to make me happy. And she did she made me very happy. But happiness doesn’t last.

The last time I had seen my grandmother was eleven years ago. That was when my family and I had moved to Chicago. My family was planning on going back to Karachi, Pakistan for my brother's wedding over the summer. I was so excited for three reasons. First, that I was going to see my grandmother after eleven years. Secondly, my brother was getting married. And finally, I had been away from my country for so many years. So I was really exicited to be finally going back.

When I finally got to Karachi, my relatives came to the airport to pick us up. My parents and my relatives greeted each other and exchanged a few words before we headed home. When we all got home, I saw that my grandmother was sitting on sofa waiting for us. When she saw us slowly walk through that door, she had a look on her face that I will never forget. She was bursting with joy, she was crying and laughing at the same moment. She was very happy to see us and especially me. Well that night my grandmother and I just sat on her bed talked the whole night.

The next day we started shopping for my bother's wedding. We all bought tons of clothes, and other materials required for a wedding such as shoes, jewelry, and etc…. My mom and my dad were out booking halls for the wedding. So, well all decided to go site seeing. My cousins took us places that I had seen when I was a boy. We had a great time there. After we got back my grandmother had made lunch for us. Also my parents had arrived. So we all had lunch together. That was the best lunch ever, because my whole family was there including my grandmother.

It was time for my brother's wedding. That night my grandmother got a little sick so she decided to stay home. I wanted to stay with her, but she didn’t want me to miss out on my brother's wedding. So well went to the wedding. The wedding turned out great but it wasn’t the same without my grandmother. So when we all got home she her condition had gotten worse. So my dad took her to the hospital. She stayed at he hospital for a couple days and came back. She looked much better. So we all talked about the wedding and how everything turned out. After that little talk, we all decided to let my grandmother rest. So we all went to our beds to sleep and she also went to sleep. But who knew that this sleep would be my grandmother final sleep.

The next morning I was awakened to a roar of cries and discovered that my grandmother had passed away. I didn’t know what to do. I just sat in my room and just stared at the ceiling. I later found out that she had passed away that morning in her sleep. Well that afternoon my family, my uncles, everyone, we went to the mortuary to say our final goodbyes. Then she was buried.

My grandmother was my best friend. Even though she passed away she will always live on in my heart. I will never forget one thing she said to me. She told me that she will always be here for me not matter what happened. But you what even though she is dead, she still is always there for me when I need her. Always looking out for me. Even though if someone you love goes away, they will always be there and will always live on in your heart.

The No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law by President Bush on January 8, 2000, was designed to give our schools and our country the most groundbreaking education reform in many years. The U.S. Congress thought it was so important that they passed it by overwhelming majorities of Democrats and Republicans. There are four basic education reform principles in NCLB. The first is stronger accountability for results states are responsible for having strong academic standards for what every child should know and learn in reading, math, and science for elementary, middle and high schools. The second is increased flexibility and local control the new law gives all 50 states and every local school district in America greater say in using the federal education dollars they receive every year. The third is expanded options for parents to help their children if they are enrolled in schools chronically identified as in need of improvement. The fourth principle is an emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work (Introduction, 2000).

President Bill Clinton signed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 17 (IDEA) into law on June 4, 1997. IDEA was intended to provide for the education of children with disabilities. The law is significant in that it provides an individual education program, or IEP, as well as critical civil rights and due process protections for children with disabilities, including students with communication disorders. The focus of IDEA changed from one that merely provided disabled children access to an education, to one that improves results for all children in our education system. The 17 IDEA strengthened the role of parents in educational planning and decision making on behalf of their children (Idea 7, 1997).

On Wednesday, April 10, 2000, the House of Representatives passed H.R.1950, the reauthorization of IDEA, by a vote of 51 to 171. H.R. 150 includes several major changes to the current IDEA law. Under this bill, all students will be treated the same when it comes to discipline, regardless of disabilities (current law allows for the removal of a student with a disability for up to 45 days if the problem behavior involves weapons or drugs). H.R. 1950 is controversial because it rewrites sections of the current law and deletes many provisions that protect the rights of children with disabilities. In spite of the numerous concerns from many quarters about this bill, House authors did not significantly change it and pushed to pass it quickly (IDEA reauthorization, 2000).
The reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act adds an unknown wrinkle to what inclusive assessment and accountability systems may look like for students with disabilities. Will it be an add-on, an overlay or the same as that spelled out in No Child Left Behind?

cheap term papers

In any case, both laws point in the same direction of accountability - outcomes over process, parental options, and use of empirically based teaching methods. These laws together provide a long-awaited opportunity for general educators and special educators to work together to bridge the divide that exists between the two fields. Common areas to both fields that are affected by NCLB include access to core curriculum, opportunity to learn, research-based teaching methodology and data-based decision making.

The House passed legislation that overhauls the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and protections for children with disabilities. Under the House bill, children with disabilities can be expelled for violating codes of conduct without any inquiry into whether the behavior is connected to a disability. Also, parents may not be able to recover attorneys fees when they try to compel states to provide services.

The IDEA has provided education services to millions of students with disabilities since 1975, resulting in their learning the skills to hold a job, live and participate in their communities and become contributing members of society. Some of the negative changes in the reauthorization include

• Eliminating short-term objectives in the Individualized Education Program (IEP). The objectives are benchmarks to hold schools accountable for providing effective services.

• Making three-year IEPs optional for schools and parents. Parents are concerned that schools will seek this option. Three-year IEPs do not provide adequate accountability for measuring the progress of students.

• Not fully funding IDEA or making IDEA funding mandatory. The IDEA has never received the 40 percent federal funding promised by Congress at the laws inception in 1975.

• Requiring states to offer binding arbitration in disputes between parents and schools or other providers. While the arbitration is optional, some families may not understand they cannot appeal a decision of binding arbitration.

• Eliminating Community Parent Resource Centers, organizations that provide services to parents.

• Providing schools with unilateral authority to remove students with disabilities from schools, without considering the relationship of the disability to the behavior.

One area of IDEA which must be strengthened and enforced is that of school accountability. IDEA must be enforced rigorously so that children with disabilities receive FAPE (Free and Appropriate Education). It is that simple. Procedural safeguards must be meaningful and understandable to the typical parent and must be efficient for families and schools. Parents must be provided the tools they need to be active partners in their childrens education. There should be parent advisory councils in special education for all districts. Without such a requirement, schools continually dismiss parents concerns and provide roadblocks to gaining knowledge and becoming empowered at every turn. The reauthorization of IDEA would do well to strengthen the parent involvement piece if parents are meant to be equal and relevant stakeholders.

Schools must also become more assertive and knowledgeable on critical transition periods in a childs life. These students need help to successfully transition from early intervention, from preschool to school, and from school to employment and/or post-secondary education. This latter transition is completely ignored by many schools in this country today.

One Saturday I walked through the Prudential Mall and stopped into a fascinating store called Successories (www.successories.com) where I came across the following quote on a small colorful card, “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Choose your words, for they become actions. Understand your actions, for they become habits. Study your habits, for they will become your character. Develop your character, for it becomes your destiny.” I strongly agree with the quote and try to use it as a guide each day. This writing exposition will cover thу following area ethics, the difference between ethics, morals, beliefs and values, my ethics, what has influenced my ethics, manifestation of my ethics, and how my ethics affect my decision-making.

Dictionary.com defines ethics as “motivation based on ideas of right and wrong” (Source Websters Revised Unabridged Dictionary). Ethics are behavioral traits that define the manner of a personal conduct upon the individuals’ core values, beliefs and morals. In effect, one determines how one will interpret rules, and how one will treat others, based upon well defined morals. It is not possible to have ethics without morals because ethics is a measure of the consistency of conduct to morals.

Ethics are situational because they provide the decision making framework for an individual faced with apparent conflict. For example, how does one interpret “Thou shalt not kill” when one must east to live (whether is it animal or vegetable life being compromised)?

Morals are fibers from which all else is made. These are core values and beliefs. Core values and beliefs are fixed, black and white, and not negotiable. They represent basic, inherent understanding of how things are, or ought to be. They are not situational, unlike ethics, nor are they topical. Morals start from birth and are built brick by brick as we grow and mature. At some point in our lives, they become fixed and ingrained in each one of us.

Morals are core values of ourselves within society and without. They are not things that we have based upon what we believe about other things. For example, one might proclaim to have certain morals based upon a particular religion in which one has received an instruction set from God or a god. In effect, the instruction set is just that actual rules. How the rules are interpreted reflect personal ethics. Whether or not an individual may be attracted to a particular religion reflects upon core values and beliefs. Core values and beliefs, as defined in morals, does not refer to beliefs about God, but to personal instruction set.

As religion has entered the discussion, it is necessary to fine it as well, but it will not be a topic of further discussion. Religion, defined by dictionary.com, is a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader. Thus, it becomes evident how such necessary structure affects the nature of personal core values and beliefs.

Following a brief explanation of ethics, morals, beliefs and values, I would like to mention a little about what my ethics are through karate, a way of life for me. Karate training builds character. It makes one a better human being. Most people are familiar with the rigorous physical training endured by karate students, particularly in the early days of the art in Okinawa, Japan and Hawaii. Despite the seemingly “superhuman” feats of some karate practitioners, physical conditioning and demonstrations represent only the most basic level of training.

Because of the tremendous danger posed by a well-trained fist, the teachers of old were extremely careful in selecting their students. A prospective student might be forced to endure numerous rejections, insults and even physical attacks from the teacher before he is considered for acceptance. Once accepted, he might then have to endure months or years of menial chores followed by grueling and monotonous basic training exercises. A student could expect to spend at least three years on the first kata (form or sequence of movements). All this was designed to test the students patience and determination. Moreover, it ensured that the student would develop sound basics. Naturally, a high percentage of students quit out of sheer frustration. The system was designed to eliminate hot tempered and impatient students before they could learn the more dangerous aspects of karate. In addition, students were constantly taught ethics in the form of sayings or stories that were handed down from generation to generation.

One of the most well-known sayings is that “karate begins and ends with courtesy.” On the surface level, we observe that each kata begins and ends with a bow. The student also bows when entering and leaving the dojo and when greeting his sensei and seniors. Bowing and similar formalities, however, represent only the outer form of courtesy. A karate students courtesy must flow from the “kokoro” or heart and extend to respect for life itself. As such, karate is never used for aggressive purposes but only for self-defense as a last resort.

The greatest ethic of karate is to avoid its use. “Karate ni sente nashi” means that “there is no first attack in karate.” As a defensive, unarmed art, karate is only used when there is no other alternative. The best strategy is to prevent or avoid a confrontation. When one is attacked unexpectedly, karate may be used but only to the extent necessary. If attacked by a single assailant, some of the teachers of old recommended the use of non-deadly techniques similar to those practiced in judo or jujutsu. The potentially lethal striking and kicking techniques of karate were reserved for attacks by armed or multiple assailants. “Karate ni senti nashi” means more than not attacking first. By such as simple definition, a karate practitioner could simply wait for an attack and deliver a deadly counter-attack. Karate students are taught to hold back their fists when angry and to ensure that they are calm and clear-headed when forced into a defensive situation.

When the situation calls for it, a karate practitioner will commit himself wholeheartedly to the cause of justice, whether directed toward his own defense or the protection of others. Gichin Funakoshi, one of the Okinawans most responsible for the introduction of karate to mainland Japan, and the founder of the Shotokan form of karate, wrote that “true Karate-Do is this that in daily life, ones mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility; and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice.” Shoshin Nagamine, founder of the Matsubayashi-Ryu form of Shorin-Ryu wrote that “the dojo is the place where courage is fostered and superior human nature is bred through the ecstasy of sweating in hard work.” When asked for a brief definition of a good Karate person, Shoshin Nagamine replied “Kisshu fushin (Oni te hotoke kokoro) - a demons hand, a saints heart.”

Hence, with karate being a large part of my life I have abided by these underlying principals of karate-do for almost 15 years. I am faced with using these principles on a daily basis to help handle criticism and unexpected difficulties; such as how do I act when I am faced with a problem at home, work, or school. As being a karate practitioner, such situations are a part of my training. I must remain calm when punched or kicked and easily deflect the blow - and should be able to remain calm when cursed at or when a driver acts rudely on the freeway. How do I act in an emergency? Am I able to summon all my strength and determination at a moments notice? These are the true test of my ability and manifestation of my ethics. Karate without the ethical component has been described as nothing but “beastly behavior.”

Everyday I am faced with decisions, some more critical than others. For example, my fiancу was in an accident about 1 month ago and she called me at 4.45 a.m. awaking me. Taken completely off guard, I was barely awake and then suddenly I became alert and took passive control over the phone conversation. I had to think quickly because I did not know if it was a serious accident or mild. I started asking with “are you okay”, “where are you now”, and after a few quick questions, “I finished with do not worry about anything; just come home, everything will be fine.” I realized this was a critical time for my fiance and I had to be very careful with what I said otherwise I could exacerbate her emotional state. Another example would be at my current job, as IKON Office Solutions Boston Senior IT Specialist. My team of people and I support more than 500 people, most sales representatives. Sometimes we get issues where we are dealing with a very impatient person. If my team cannot handle them I have them escalate the issue to me immediately. I listen, and at the same time think very quickly and the respond, all with never raising my voice or cutting off the individual. I want to respect their thoughts and frustration. When they are done I usually have the opportunity to speak and resolve the situation as quick as possible or provide them with comfort. If I decide to cut off someone, then I feel as if I am disrespecting trying to push myself over them and the user might feel they are not being heard. I have developed a great amount of patience and will not allow much to throw me out of mental balance. Over the past 4 years, I have noticed I remain calm in just about any situation.

Whenever I have the opportunity I walk into Successories wondering what other words of wisdom I will be able to come across. I believe that my destiny has not been determined and that every decision I make or actions I take will affect my life in some way. A note to end on, “The future doesn’t just happen, it is created…Our destiny is not in the stars, but in ourselves. We may need to follow in the wake of those who have gone before, but what we do and where we go is ultimately up to us. The attitude of initiative is an on-going state of exploration that is never finished…a journey that never ends, until you want it to end.”

The rapid rate of deforestation in the tropics is a key driving force in the yearly increase of flood disasters. According to a Food and Agriculture Organization and United Nations Environmental Program (FAO/UNEP) study in 1981, tropical forests are disappearing at the rate of 7.3 million hectares (18 million acres) per year

· 4. million hectares (10.4 million acres) a year in Latin America

· 1.8 million hectares (4.4 million acres) a year in Asia

· 1 million hectares (2.1 million acres) a year in Africa.

There are several causes of deforestation, the main one being the extraction of wood or logging. Wood has always been a primary forest product for human populations and industrial interests. Wood is a significant component of any forest, its elimination has instant implications on forest health. Intensive harvests can cause acute deprivation and degradation, well beyond a forest’s ability to recover. When the soil has been exposed of its nutrients, farmers move further into the forests, looking for new land. Today, the worst offender of deforestation would possibly be in the Brazilian Amazon is cattle ranching. 8% of deforestation in the Amazon is due to large scale cattle ranching. Mining for valuable resources also plays a major role in causing deforestation today.

Deforestation also has many destructive effects. It affects climate significantly, in part because the forest plays a major role in the water cycle, recycling rain back into the clouds as it receives rainfall. As a result, when the land is cleared, flooding and drought become serious problems, as rainwater travels quickly through the ground without the forest to regulate it.

The expansion of agriculture, firewood collection and unfettered timber harvesting are the primary causes of deforestation and the loss of forest.

The spread of agriculture, firewood collection, and unregulated timber harvesting are the principal immediate causes of forest losses. But behind these lurk more basic failures. Usually, uncontrolled deforestation is a symptom of a societys inability to get a grip on other fundamental development problems agricultural stagnation, grossly unequal land tenure, rising unemployment, rapid population growth, and the incapacity to regulate private enterprise to protect the public interest.

Before the war with Germany had ended civil war broke out in Russia. Several groups known as ‘Whites’ opposed the Bolsheviks. There were socialists, liberals, nationalists, and former Tsarist generals. They set up separate government in different parts of Russia and began to fight the Bolsheviks. Britain and France supplied some of them with arms, and also sent soldiers, in the hope that if they won they would bring Russia back in to the war against Germany. In the east Japan, and in the west Poland, took advantage of the chaos caused by the civil war to seize large parts of Russian territory. Facing the Whites and the Poles was the Bolshevik Red Army. It was organised by Leon Trotsky, one of the most brilliant soviet leaders.

For nearly three years the Reds and the Whites fought each other all over Russia. In March 11 the Bolsheviks won because they not only controlled the industrial areas but the Red Army was well trained and well led. The Whites lacked outstanding leaders, they were constantly divided, and at times even fought each other. France and Britain gave little help and soon withdrew from Russia.

Millions of people were killed in the fighting or died from starvation. During the war the Tsar and his family were killed by the Bolsheviks. The old Russian empire was gone forever. But all the national groups were not free. When the revolution began many thought that they could break away from Russian rule and set up their own independent states. But gradually the Bolsheviks regained control of almost all the lands which had previously been ruled by the Tsar. The Bolsheviks now called the new state the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), or the Soviet Union. They hoped that as the Communist revolution spread other countries would join a union of socialist states.
