Transcendentalism is a philosophy that two men believed in greatly, Ralph Emerson and Henry Thoreau. These men both expressed their views of transcendentalism in writing. While they had similar views and ideas, they were different. Emerson had ideas and wrote about them, but Thoreau went a step further and lived his ideas.

Both Emerson and Thoreau were transcendentalists, so of course they had similar ideas and philosophies. Both men believed that man should get back to nature, and escape from the busy modern life. They believed that God created man and creates through man, and that man should live life with nature and not apart from it. As Thoreau said, “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears however measured or far away.” This quote implies that people should not attempt to follow the path of “progress” and modernization simply because the majority of others do. Emerson and Thoreau had many similarities in their ideas, and of course they had differences.

For Emerson, it was enough to have transcendentalist beliefs and write about them. Thoreau was a man who constantly sought out knowledge and believed life should be full of learning and experiencing. When surrounded by nature, Emerson wrote that he would become and “invisible eye”. Emerson meant that all the focus would be on nature, he was not even there and simply observing. This differed from Thoreau’s views in some respects. Thoreau immersed himself in nature while living at Walden Pond, believing that man is more of a part of nature when surrounded by it.
