I was raised in Ghana on the West Coast of Africa, along with two older sisters. My family was very supportive of everything I did; I was taken to the best school, so I could pursue my dream of being a software prgrammer. I was very popular and received a lot of attention from both friends and family. I was alwys chatting with my mother, talking on the phone to keep up with the gossip or getting on the nerves of my siblings. Everything everywhere was so familiar until my senior secondary year.
I was accepted into a strict boarding school. In this place there were no people with whom I had grown up. Over here, I learned what it was to accept the unfamiliar and respect the opinion of people who did not share mine. In many ways, this school led me from one phase of my life to another. From my duties to sharing with people I hardly knew. I realized that life was not about what one knew but what one was willing to know. I saw my mother once every other week and was not allowed home until the term was over. I learned to learn from others and dealt with pressure from my teachers to maintain good grades to keep the reputation of the school. As I began to adjust, the unfamiliar seemed to become familiar.
After a year, it was thought that I would be better exposed to opportunities denied many of my peers in Ghana by coming to the United States. One of the worst experiences is having to leave my friends, family and beloved dog. It seemed so different now that we were going to be continents apart, and I would not be able to see my loved ones after every term. At this point, my goals in life were put to a test. I was torn between staying with my family and friends or utilizing the opportunity that had been placed before me. I came to the decision that it was in my own interest to once again, leave the all-so familiar traditions and culture I was accustomed to. I was to come to an unfamiliar place where the only people I knew were a couple of family members I had never met and my sister who was trying to work her way through coolege. Moving to America was a huge step I took to continue my education.
My moving here has made me more independent than I thought I could ever be, before, I had neverhad to work for anything but keeping my grades up. Any work I ever did was voluntary. Over here I had to work to be able to look after myself. I had come from a place where it was desperately needed for me to do so taughtme that people don’t openly accept the unfamiliar. This time I was on the outside looking in.
I have adjusted, adjusted enough to feel comfortable with who I am and what I have achieved over the years in becoming the person that I am now. I know that life is what you make it. I respect others’ opinion but maintaining mine, my beliefs and culture, accepting diverstiy, adjusting to situations but learning from them and making everything around me a fun experience. I am confident that I can do anyhting and be anything, given the opportunity. Hopefully, Delaware State University will give me an opportunity.
