According to Dr. Richard Villanueva, San Pedro died of cardiac arrest secondary to acute myocardial infarction.
Villanueva quoted San Pedros personal nurse as saying that the composer had a history of hypertension and heart ailments. Just recently, he said, San Pedro survived a stroke.
Proclaimed National Artist for Music, San Pedro was the fourth of eight children of Elpidio San Pedro and Soledad Diestro. He traced his musical genes from his maternal grandfather who was church organist during the Spanish colonial period.
When his maternal grandfather, Rafael Diestro, died, San Pedro succeeded him as church organist when he was only in his late teens, by which time he had already composed not only songs and hymns but also two complete Masses for voices and orchestra.
Born on Feb. 11,1913 in Angono, San Pedro was married to Gertrudez Diaz and had five children.
He enrolled in the University of the Philippines and was a university scholar of the UP College of Music until his graduation.
San Pedro earned a Teachers Diploma in Composition and Conducting under several teachers like Antonino Buenaventura, Antonio Molina (all National Artists for Music), Francisco Santiago and Juan S. Hernandez.
He took advance training in composition under Bernard Wagenaar of the Netherlands and harmony and orchestration under the eminent Vittorio Giannini. He pursued further studies at the Julliard School of Music in 1947.
In between composing, San Pedro taught composition at the UP College of Music and served as chair of its Composition and Conducting Department from 1970 and 1975.
He also taught at the St. Scholasticas College, La Concordia College, Philippine Womens University, Santa Isabel College, St. Paul College, St. Josephs College and the Centro Escolar University.
