Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. It is a story telling the tragic story of Macbeth and how his flaws led to his death. He was full of bravery, courage, determination, and ambition, but his ambition was his downfall. He was told his destiny and he had a promising future, but his ambition soon turned into greed. He tried to take matters into his own hands and that was wrong .
First, he is told by three hideous witches that he would be Thane of Cawdor, then he is told that he would be king thereafter. He did not believe it until the original Thane of Cawdor is charged and executed for treason and he is next in line to be Cawdor. Once he learns of this news, he starts to ponder rather the witches were telling the truth. He thinks that maybe he would be King and with the motivation of Lady Macbeth, he decides to kill King Duncan and his sons so that he would have to be the next king. So he took matters into his own hands and killed King Duncan while he was asleep. After he killed him he did feel guilty but Lady Macbeth called him all types of cowards. This starts the character change for Macbeth and from this point on, Macbeth’s personality and his way of thinking started to go in the wrong direction.
Banquo is one of Macbeth’s closet friends but Macbeth thinks that Banquo suspected him of killing the king. So the “new” King Macbeth hired some murders to kill his friend Banquo and his son Fleance and they did just that. They stabbed him about twenty times in the head but Fleance escaped. This shows what kind of person that Macbeth had turned into. He is so caught up in his own selfish ways that he did not even stop to think that if the witches told him that he is going to be Thane and that came true without his help that he would become king without him forcing the issue.
Think next scene was the turning point of the story because this made many people get suspicious about Macbeth. He is having a dinner party and he is about to sit down to eat when he sees the ghost of Banquo full of the stab gashes across his head. He is the only one who sees the ghost and he starts to become real hysterical and people thinks he was becoming sick. Lady Macbeth responded quickly saying that he acts like that often and she asks that everyone leave so that he could get some rest.
By Macbeth seeing Banquo’s ghost he decides to go see the witches who first told him his future. The witches know what Macbeth has done and they decides to punish him for being greedy. So they show him three apparitions. The first is the armed head which says to beware of Macduff, the second is a bloody child which says that no man born of a women could ever harm Macbeth, the third is a crowned child which says that Macbeth shall not vanquish until the trees of Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill come against him. This just adds fuel to the fire. This, of course, made Macbeth feel invincible, like he couldn’t be touch. He felt that if no man born of a woman could harm that no person could harm him because everyone is born of a woman. At this point Macbeth’s arrogance has gotten out of control.
Afterwards, Macduff leaves England to retrieve Malcolm and by the apparition telling him to beware of Macduff, he decides that he is going to kill Macduff and the rest of his family so that he would not have to worry about him. Macbeth has gotten so big-headed that he says that he is going to kill any and everyone who got in his way. Macbeth hires some more murderers to kill Lady Macduff and her son, which they did. Macbeth is killing innocent people everywhere. By now Macbeth character has made a 60 degree turn for the worse and there was no turning back.
Macduff was enraged when he heard word that his family had been murdered. Malcolm, Siward, Macduff, Siward’s son and soldiers all marched up to Macbeth castle with burning tree branches in hand. When they reached the castle, young Siward is slain by Macbeth and Macbeth believed that he beat him because he is born of women. Then he and Macduff came face to face. Now what is so ironic about this is that Macduff mother died before he was born and he was cut out of her. So he was never born of a women. The two men fight and Macduff kills Macbeth. He had avenged his family’s death.
Macbeth greed and his selfishness led to his death. He tries to take matters into his own hands instead of letting destiny take its course. His flaws also led to his character change, which went from good to bad to worse. He is too blind to see what is happening and that is a tragic end to what is going to be a bright future.
