Thomas Jefferson, the American icon, is best remembered as the author of our Declaration of Independence and as a great president. Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell plantation in western Virginia. He later went on to excel in school and graduated at William and Mary College in Virginia. After college, Jefferson became involved in government and was elected president of the Virginia House of Burgesses. Jefferson soon found himself a forerunner of the American Revolution, when he was appointed to write the Declaration of Independence. Authoring this important document positioned him as one of the new nation's most important founding fathers equal to Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, James Madison, and John Adams. As many people know Jefferson desired separation from Great Britain; but didn’t actually support the Revolutionary War by fighting as a soldier. In spite of the fact, his famous document would eventually propel him to the position of the U.S. presidency.

His election signaled the first peaceful transfer of political power, as he was inaugurated on March 12, 1801. Before Jefferson entered office, John Adams under-handedly appointed nearly 200 new judges at midnight, with intentions of providing the Federalist with a strong voice by dominating the judicial branch. Adams actions were allowed by the recent inception of the Judiciary Act of 1801, which would later be repealed in a landmark Supreme Court decision in Marbury vs. Madison in 1803. This decision gave the supreme court the power of Judicial Review, right to declare legislative acts unconstitutional. During his two-terms Jefferson managed to acquire some pretty significant accomplishments. He repealed most internal taxes, cut national expenses, reduced the U.S. military and virtually doubled the United States landmass with the Louisiana Purchase. The Embargo Act and his many contradictions marred Jefferson’s brilliant presidential legacy, because he suffered from the Modern Politician’s disease. Saying what is ideally popular and not really believing it, therefore he is known as “The Great American Paradox”.

He was considered a strict constructionist of the national government around the Constitution. His interpreting ideals were strongly contradicted in the Louisiana Purchase. He opposed Hamilton on his idea for the Bank of the U.S. by claiming that the Constitution didn’t enumerate those sorts of powers; but in 1803 when the French foreign minister offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory he was obliged at the bargain and bought it for $15 million dollars. Jefferson was in strong opposition to Hamilton throughout the 1790s, occasionally accusing him of being corrupt.

Yet, Jefferson used Federal funds to finance an anti-Hamilton/Washington newspaper and also used funds to add to his wine collection and other personal habits. Jefferson denounced Hamilton’s brilliant Report on Manufactures and proclaimed that America must become the land of the citizen farmer, but yet he opened a nail factory for outside sales, which was worked on be his slaves.

One of Jefferson’s highly controversial paradoxes that would become a major flaw in his character and presidency was his issue on slavery. How can the man who wrote in the Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal" have been a slave owner all his life? Slaves built and renovated Jefferson's home. Slaves cultivated his gardens and fields. They cared for his grandchildren and served his friends. Kept a slave beside him as he wrote the Declaration of Independence; brought slaves to Washington as he restored democracy to American government. While other Virginians freed their slaves, Jefferson remained a slaveholder to his death. Slaves even dug his grave. Many debates continue to rage now, as in Jefferson's own lifetime, concerning his relationship with Sally Hemings, one of Jefferson's slaves, after Martha's death. Although Jefferson denied their affair and the rumors that he fathered two of Hemings's children, recent DNA evidence presents a convincing case that Jefferson was indeed the biological father. Most historians now believe that Jefferson and Hemings had a sexual relationship.

Although Jefferson was controversial and exceedingly paradoxical, this great nation would not be the same without him. It is many historians’ opinions that all presidents after Jefferson, have lived in his shadow and are measured against his mark. He was a great man that excelled in most of his endeavors causing many people to forget that he was human and we all make mistakes. So let us try not to be too critical of this American icon and remember his legacy as one of lasting influence on American ideology.
